So what about that amazing PCV stuff, huh? I saw all kinds of designs and I took no pictures of them. I meant to but never got around to it. Next year I want some easy, cheap, shade structures. Anyone have plans, tips, advice, warnings?

Dome on the brain

Howdy Yall,

My names Jim, and I'm a burner!

I've been twice now and have become (I believe) thoroughly hooked. This year I am planning on building a dome for my camp. It should be very similar to the dome outlined here: http://burningman.rengeekcentral.com/Dome.html.

So the question I pose to you engineers is this: Will 3/4" EMT be solid enough? The struts will be less then 5' in length, but 3/4" still seems kinda flimsy to me for something so large. I want it to be able to support a hammock off of a few vertices...

Water purification

I know that camps recycle their water to different degrees, I found a blurb today on the Portland Chapter of Engineers without Borders (http://www.ewbportland.org/) site that refers to a promising cheap technology for water purification.

From an article published in the Newsletter for:
To Love Children Educational Foundation International, Inc.
www.tolovechildren.org
Crystal Clear Technologies has developed an affordable water purification system, which
successfully removes 99.999% of impurities from water. The technology uses a dirt-cheap zeolite
mineral, found globally. It is a natural molecular sieve, but it does not do everything, so we
designed chemical coatings that are synthesized from dirt-cheap compounds, and bonded them
onto the surface of the zeolite, thus modifying it. We can make the coatings to target certain
classes of contaminants.
This technology can be made in the country or nation that needs it, and can also be a source of
income. In addition, if made in-country, those who make it could control more aspects of clean
water availability. With privatization of nations’ water rights being traded for dollars from the IMF,
there will be serious and dire consequences down the road to the people who live in countries
most in need of water purification systems.
We are pursuing the viability of having Engineers Without Borders (EWB) set up the SMZ
manufacturing, with funding from IMF/World Bank money.
We look forward to partnering with To Love Children to bring our technology to Africa and to help
provide education concerning the importance of clean water, so that children can become
beneficiaries.

So you know, I'm not an engineer or anything but I joined this group because I was looking to make my BM experience that much better.
I think my biggest peeve was the whole bathroom experience at BM.
Now we all think lights in the portos would help (I agree).
Do you think there is any good way to make a bathroom for your camp that can be used when there is emergencies. (ie: Drunken pee at night when it's too far to go to the portos)
I dunno. Maybe the best answer is a bucket. But maybe we all can come up with something good.

transformation = completed.

the thing that made we want to do this was this thread in the main BM tribe:
http://sanfrancisco.tribe.net/thread/6b53c870-678f-4157-b9e5-2b9ee7db8225?tribeid=2a015c8a-8c2f-4657-8716-9395874aa780&r=10535

It made me realize that our evap pond this year was fucking pitiful. the "swamp cooler' idea, or this one which the creator claims could get rid of 5 gallons of gray water daily:
http://sanfrancisco.tribe.net/thread/6b53c870-678f-4157-b9e5-2b9ee7db8225?tribeid=2a015c8a-8c2f-4657-8716-9395874aa780&threads=true&r=10535#80fe95e9-8d65-407d-88a9-14569d8b6db4

This is the kind of shit we should be doing.

Structural / Kinetic / Pyro Engineer ---> Playmate + $

As a licensed architect and sculptor, I often find myself drawn to projects on the edge...
Sometimes, they have limited budgets...
Sometimes, they pay nicely... and hence I can do the others pro-bono...

I have engineers that I work with 'professionally', whom are quite good and even experimental, but their motivation is not simply to PLAY and HAVE FUN.

There are times when I need to hover large pointy things in the air over a crowd, kant out walls that taper below the 'safety factor'...

I am looking for structural / kinetic engineers, especially in the Pacific Northwest [or digitally savvy], that would like to play on projects where we would sometimes get paid, and sometimes not...

Look forward to collaborating with you!

Ciao,

Zeer pots and refrigeration

interesting article about double-walled pots being used for refrigeration in Africa. While they don't get really cold, they still could be useful for recycling not too nasty gray water and keeping non-essentials cool and out of the cooler, where more important things like beer can hog up the space.
